World Vision 40 Hour Challenge

For the first time post-covid, Shirley Boys’ High School took part in the World Vision 40 Hour Challenge. This took place from 8pm Friday 21st to 12pm Sunday 23rd June 2024.

The kaupapa behind the challenge this year was to raise funds to help deal with the effects of climate change in a small nation in Southeast Asia called Timor-Leste. The boys on the committee set a fundraising goal of $2,500. Students were encouraged to get creative and pick their own challenge to participate in over the challenge weekend. In addition to individual challenges, a non-uniform day was held on the Thursday just before the challenge weekend, with proceeds going towards SBHS’s fundraising goal.

All of these efforts paid off with Shirley Boys’ High School raising just shy of $5,500! A special shout out to House captains, Maia Te tohu a tu Gerrard, Johnny Andrews, James Darnell and Seth De Rose who blew SBHS’s original fundraising goal out of the water. These boys cashed in a whopping $2,550 by tag teaming on and off a treadmill at Snap Fitness New Brighton for 40 Hours. Two students who made tremendous individual fundraising efforts were Ryley Dijkstra who raised $500 and Mataio Tuisuga who raised $465.

All in all, the World Vision 40 Hour Challenge weekend was a success and Shirley Boys’ High School would not have been able to do it without the mahi of all students who got involved and those who supported them.”
