The Senior A boys had a huge obstacle to climb, coming up against the unbeaten 2024 National Champs – Christ’s College for the Final of the Thomson Trophy.
Coach Costley had the boys fully prepared for the inevitable battle between the two top teams in the competition.
The first quarter had many lead changes while both sides were feeling each other out. Toby Hunt (10) and Hozay Tito-Haitana (9) led the way for the Spartans. Despite this, the Spartans went into the quarter time break down 25-29.
The College team showed their class and experience by pushing their lead out to 7 points at half time 50-43. Milan Newton kept the Spartans close with 8 points in the period.
The third quarter saw the games MVP Toby Hunt explode for 16 points in the quarter. The Spartans managed to turn the 7 point deficit into a 3 point lead heading into the final 10mins.
Some gritty team defense, and some big baskets from Toby Hunt, Milan Newton, Jack Cockburn and Liam Marshall in the 4th quarter, allowed the Spartans to slowly push their lead out. Great defensive pressure, some big rebounds, and timely blocks, saw the Spartans secure the Thomson Trophy title for 2025 with the final score being 95-87 to the Shirley team.
Toby Hunt won the finals MVP on the back of a 40 point performance.
