The 2025 season was one to remember for the Shirley Boys’ High School First XI football team – a campaign built on brotherhood, belief, and a deep sense of pride in the badge.
With a theme of Redemption set for the season to overcome last year’s one. From the first whistle of the season to the final dramatic penalty in the premiership game, the team demonstrated what it truly means to represent Shirley Boys’ with heart and determination.
We started the season in dominant form, going unbeaten through the first round and putting together a string of outstanding performances. The team held both the Brentwood Cup and the Challenge Shield for a record-breaking streak, the longest in school history. Our only loss of the season came in the second round, a well-fought match against a strong St Thomas side, where we surrendered both trophies. Despite the setback, the team bounced back with even more hunger, showing the character that defined our campaign and made it to the finals.
The final ended 0-0 after regular time, with both teams battling fiercely in a match that tested every ounce of energy and focus. It came down to penalties – the most nerve-wracking of finishes. But when it mattered most, our boys kept their cool. With clinical finishes from Taine Carswell, Anaru Hibbs, George Croton, Kawa Kemp and Will Sandford and a crucial save from Lincoln, our goalkeeper. Shirley came out on top with a 5-4 win in the shootout, securing the title and becoming the first Shirley Boys’ First XI team in history to win the Wednesday Competition.
This year also marked the final chapter in the First XI journey for six of our Year 13 players. Their leadership, experience, and dedication have been vital to the team’s success, and they leave behind a legacy of excellence both on and off the pitch. We thank them for their years of service to the team and wish them all the best in their future.
A huge thank you to the entire squad, coaching staff, supporters, and families for making this an unforgettable season. With Nationals just around the corner, we’re excited for the challenge ahead – the future of Shirley Boys’ football is looking bright.
