4/07/20 vs Marlborough College
Final Score: 33-15 Win
The Shirley Boys 1st XV played Marlborough Boys College at Linfield park. Their temporary home ground for 2020. The team came into the game captained by Jayden Horgan(C) and Sam Nicholls(VC). The Shirley boys came out of the sheds really slowly, looking half asleep, conceding a first-half deficit they will be keen to forget, with Marlborough boys taking a 10-0 lead. Then In the second half, Shirley boys outclassed and out-muscled the Malbrough team from the first to the last whistle scoring 33 points in the second half to Marlborough’s 5,this mad the final score 33-15.
During this amazing comeback in the second half game, Shirley saw tries from Ben Norton (2), Elijah Tuhura, Brodie Richards, Pele Antonio and conversions from Conner Watherston-spencer. A great second half performance saved the 1st XV on Saturday they will look to carry the second-half performance into next Saturday where they take on St Bede’s back home at Linfield again.

Basketball:
30/06/20 vs Rangiora
Final Score: 125-76 Win
The Senior A Spartans took on Rangiora for their 2nd game of the season and their first home game of the year. With the return of key player Kane Thomson (out due to injury), the Spartans were confident in their depth and this showed as they took and early lead 31-9 by the end of the first quarter. A comeback was suspected; however this never came as the Spartans continued to dominate leading 100-57 by the end of the third. At this point two main players Gregory Rodger and Kaleb Chamberlain sat and the bench played through the rest of the game and the Spartans defended home court and sent rangiora packing 117-76.
Top scorers were Kane Thomson with 23 points, Gregory Rodger with 20 points and Kaleb Chamberlain with 18 points and a highlight play of the week with an amazing poster dunk on a young Rangiora player. The Senior A Spartans improve to a 2-0 record on the season and take on St Bedes (2-0) on the 21st of July in their next matchup.

Hockey:
3/07/20 vs STAC
The first XI came up against STAC on Friday night at Nga Puna Wai. After a 2-2 draw in preseason the boys were in search of a win. Unfortunately STAC came out hard and scored in the opening minutes and continued to score one goal each quarter ending in a 4-0 loss. We struggled to gain momentum and were outplayed in all areas of the turf. We had to start the second half without a goalkeeper as Oliver Lewis was injured, a big blow for the team. A quick turnaround with a game on Monday against Christ’s College will be an opportunity to write our wrongs of this game.
